About Us
The Middlesex-London Health Unit protects and promotes the health of 520,000+ residents of the County of Middlesex and the City of London by delivering programs and services legislated under Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act. We have locations in both London and Strathroy.
Like the 28 other local public health units across the province, the work of the Middlesex-London Health Unit is defined by Ontario Public Health Standards. We are governed by a Board of Health made up of municipal and provincial appointees, and we are primarily funded by the Government of Ontario, the City of London, and the County of Middlesex.
Public health units survey the environment, evaluate available data and work with community partners to identify human health risks – and then we implement interventions intended to reduce the risk of injury or illness. Those interventions might occur at the individual level, like providing individuals with testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Or, they might be delivered at the community level, like providing health expertise to local politicians as they develop public policies.
Our public health professionals identify and address the public health issues that affect all of us. From the water we drink, to the bike lanes we ride on, to the immunizations our children receive to start school – each of us is influenced by public health activities every day.
Our goal is to approach our work with a health equity lens – looking beyond individual choices to the often unjust and unfair systems that hold people back from health and well-being due to their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age or socioeconomic status.
We are committed to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and communities and our work is influenced by our Anti-Black Racism Plan which outlines 45 recommendations focused on addressing and eliminating anti-Back racism from public health programs and services.
