Violence affects all people, some people are more at risk of experiencing violence because of various forms of oppression, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism (Government of Canada, 2022).

Types of Violence

  • Interpersonal (Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Gender Based Violence (GBV), Abuse of Older Adults, Child Abuse, Family Violence)
  • Community (gang, gun violence, workplace, assault by a stranger, hate crimes)
  • Collective (historical, structural, hate crimes, and racism)

Forms of Abuse:

  • Physical Abuse (threats or use of physical force)
  • Emotional / Psychological Abuse (control, manipulation, neglect)
  • Sexual Abuse (unwanted sexual acts, no consent)
  • Financial Abuse (control over money)
  • Spiritual, and Cultural Abuse (uses one’s beliefs/ culture to control or dominate them)
  • Harassment and stalking
  • Using technology to control or cause harm (bullying and manipulation)
