Parental Mental Health Awareness

Mental illnesses brought on during pregnancy and in the first year postpartum place a serious burden on young families and communities. Parents need mental health to support and promote the health of their family. There is no health without mental health.

Mental health is a state of well-being and is important for all Canadians. Mental health issues affect everyone. Whether or not you have a mental health concern, you very likely know - and love - someone who does.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are said to be the most common complication related to pregnancy. One in every five women (that’s 20%) will experience a mood or anxiety disorder during or after their pregnancy. Up to one in every ten men will experience the same.

Postpartum depression

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day provides an opportunity to bring international awareness to the importance of supporting and promoting the mental health of parents experiencing a pregnancy. Talking about mental health and mental illness during pregnancy and after the baby is born will help normalize the occurrence of complications and provide parents the supportive environment that is needed to seek help.
