Fifth Case of COVID-19 Reported in the Middlesex-London Region

Posted by on

The fifth local case of COVID-19 has been reported to the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU). The Ontario Public Health Laboratory advised Health Unit staff that a woman in her 60s had tested positive for the illness. While this individual has not travelled recently to an area affected by COVID-19, nor does she have any contact with another confirmed or probable case, public health staff continue to investigate for a possible source. The individual is currently self-isolating. MLHU staff members have also communicated with the woman’s close contacts, who have also been advised to remain in self-isolation at home for the next 14 days.

“Our staff are working diligently to follow up with this person’s close contacts and advising them to stay home for the next 14 days in an effort to reduce further potential spread of the virus,” says Dr. Alex Summers, Associate Medical Officer of Health at the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “We know we’re going to see an increase in the number of confirmed local cases in the coming days. Therefore, we’re asking the community to be vigilant: exercise social distancing, limit non-essential gatherings and ensure you stay home if you start to develop symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, new or worsening cough, or difficulty breathing.”

If you believe you have symptoms of COVID-19, please use the Ministry of Health’s self-assessment tool at: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment before visiting an Assessment Centre.

The Health Unit recommends the following actions to not only help prevent the spread of novel coronavirus/COVID-19 infections, but also many other respiratory illnesses:

  • Stay home from work and other activities if you are sick.
  • Do your best to practice social distancing by staying two metres away from others.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a waterless hand sanitizer with at least 70 percent alcohol content.
  • Cover coughs and/or sneezes with your sleeve or cough into your elbow.
  • Clean high-touch areas frequently.

The Health Unit continues to monitor this developing situation actively, in collaboration with national and provincial health agencies, as well as local stakeholders, including hospitals and community partners.

Given the expectation that the number of COVID-19 cases in London and Middlesex County will continue to increase, the Health Unit will no longer be issuing media releases to announce each new case. Instead the Health Unit will include a local case count that will be updated daily at 12 noon.
