Ages 5+ Now Eligible for Pfizer Bivalent Booster Doses at Mass and Community Vaccination Clinics

Posted by on

Following last Thursday’s announcement from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, eligibility has been expanded to children aged five to 11. They will be eligible to receive a Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent booster dose starting tomorrow, Wednesday, December 21st.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit has a supply of the pediatric bivalent booster vaccine and will begin making it available to families with children between five and 11-years-old starting tomorrow at its mass vaccination clinic at the Western Fair District and its mobile vaccination clinics.

Anyone who has not had a first or second dose of COVID-19 vaccine must receive the monovalent Moderna Spikevax or Pfizer Comirnaty vaccine to complete their primary vaccine series before being eligible to receive a bivalent booster dose. The recommended interval at which a bivalent booster dose can be administered is six months after their last COVID-19 vaccine dose. Individuals who have had COVID-19 or have tested positive on a PCR or rapid-antigen test should also wait six months before receiving a booster dose of the bivalent vaccine. A minimum interval of three months may also be available by speaking to a health care provider.

“As we enter the holiday season, we are encouraging all who are eligible to keep up to date with their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations,” says Jody Paget, Associate Manager of Vaccine Preventable Disease with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “Vaccination continues to be the best defense against severe illness and hospitalization. We must continue to use those familiar tools available to us to protect ourselves and those around us, including masking in public indoor environments, washing your hands often, and staying home is you are unwell.”

Individuals six months and older may receive a COVID-19 vaccine before, at the same time, or after non-COVID-19 vaccines, including the Influenza Vaccine.
