Upcoming Workshop: Tackle Middlesex-London Health Unit’s Infection Prevention and Control Workshop/Education Day

Join the Middlesex London Health Unit for an engaging full day of education that will have you questioning your attitudes, accessing new technology and developing strong links between environmental services and infection prevention and control. Walk away with new insight into influenza vaccine, outbreak management, fire safety and be better equipped to face the newest emerging infectious diseases.

This workshop will be of interest to professionals working in Long Term Care Homes, Retirement Homes, Acute care, Community and other Public Health Professionals.

Biographies

  • Anne Winter
    Anne Winter is a registered nurse who received her nursing diploma from George Brown College and her undergraduate nursing degree from York University. Anne worked as a critical care nurse for nearly 20 years prior to entering the field of public health. She obtained her Master’s degree in Community Health and Epidemiology in 2001 from the University of Toronto and also is certified in infection control from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. Anne worked as a nurse epidemiologist and a Senior Infection Control Consultant at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care until 2009. She is currently a senior epidemiologist at Public Health Ontario. Her interests include respiratory virus surveillance and influenza immunization in health care workers and has contributed to the development of many infection prevention and control guidelines as well as the development of seasonal and pandemic respiratory virus guidance documents and recommendations.
  • Jason Poole
    Jason is no stranger to the fire service … serving 2 years as a volunteer firefighter for Haldimand-Norfolk, and 8 years as a Company Officer holding the rank of Captain with Norfolk Fire & E.M.S. Jason also has certifications in Hazmat, Ice & Water Rescue, First Responder, Terrorism Responder and has accomplished National Pro Board, NFPA level 1035 certification in education. After 10 years serving in suppression, Jason decided to change his focus and moved onto a career in Fire Prevention, and for the past 8 years, he currently holds the position of Public Fire & Life Safety Educator in the City of London.
  • Michelle Perfect
    Michelle Perfect is a public health nurse with the Elgin St. Thomas Public Health. She has been a registered nurse for 24 years and spent the first ten years working in acute care settings in London before moving on to public health. Michelle has worked on a variety of team at Elgin St. Thomas Public Health. Michelle has been working on the communicable disease team since 2002 and attained her CIC certification in 2009.
  • Lyn Fabricius
    Graduate from Carleton University where she received her Bachelor of Arts. She attended Ryerson University for Public Health Inspection. Worked in several health units in Eastern Ontario for 10 years and worked for the MOHLTC for 20 years as an environmental health inspector and enforcement officer. Lyn joined Extendicare Canada in 2010 as an IPAC consultant and became a National Director for all the Extendicare homes in Canada in June 2013.
  • Francine Paquette
    Francine Paquette is an Infection Control Consultant with the Southwestern Ontario Infection Control Network (SWOICN), Public Health Ontario (PHO). She graduated from Ryerson University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Health. She first obtained her CIC in 2007 and recertified in 2012. Francine began her career as a public health inspector with Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Service and specialized in Infection Prevention and Control in 1998 up until she joined SWOICN in 2013. In addition to participating in working groups for the development and review of Ministry of Health and Long Term Care documents such as Control of Gastroenteritis Outbreaks in Long-Term Care Homes and Recommendations To Prevent Disease and Injury Associated with Petting Zoos in Ontario, she was also a long standing member of the Communicable Disease Committee of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI). Francine has been an instructor at Fanshawe College since 1994 where she has taught IPAC related subjects and course content for the Medical Office Assistant Program, Early Childhood Education and the Personal Support Worker Programs.
  • Laura Farrell
    Laura Farrell is the Network Coordinator at the South Western Ontario Infection Control Network. She has worked with the Regional Infection Control Networks (RICNs) since 2009 as both the Infection Control Consultant and as the Coordinator. Since joining the RICNs, Laura has coordinated a 6 month pilot of the JCYH Coaching project and has also been heavily involved with the update and renewal of PHO’s Routine Practices: Core Competencies educational modules. Laura received her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education from Memorial University in Newfoundland and went on to study Environmental Health at Ryerson University in Toronto. She is a Certified Public Health Inspector and has her Certification in Infection Control. Laura has more than 20 years of experience working in the infection prevention and control field and continues to love the ever-changing nature of the work.
  • Dr. Bryna Warshawsky
    Dr. Bryna Warshawsky is the Associate Medical Officer of Health and Director, Oral Health, Communicable Disease and Sexual Health Services for the Middlesex-London Health Unit. She graduated from McGill University in Medicine in 1986 and completed her Family Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1988. After working as a family practitioner for three years, she returned to the University of Toronto and obtained a Masters of Health Science Degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and a fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Community Medicine. She joined the Middlesex-London Health Unit in September 1994 where her main areas of responsibilities are the prevention and control of communicable diseases, oral health services and the development of sexual health programming. She is currently the Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization and is cross-appointed in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Western Ontario.
  • Hilary Caldarelli
    Hilary Caldarelli is an epidemiologist on contract at Middlesex London Health Unit in Oral Health Communicable Disease and Sexual Health Services. Hilary has worked in the field of public health epidemiology and health research for six years at organizations such as York Region Community and Health Services, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Health Studies (Co-op) and Master of Public Health from the University of Waterloo. Hilary is really excited to be involved in work in the Communicable Disease field and thoroughly enjoys learning more about pathogens, their impact on health, and most importantly, their prevention!
  • Marina Salvadori
    Marina Salvadori graduated from medicine at Queen's University in 1991. She did her residency training in pediatrics at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, then trained in Infectious Diseases at The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto. She was working there in May 2000, and joined a team of pediatricians who responded to the call for help from Walkerton. She spent the summer of 2000 working in Walkerton, then moved to London in October 2000. She is currently an infectious diseases consultant at the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, and an Associate Professor at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. She is part of the team that conducts the Walkerton Health Study to provide care and monitor health problems of the people of Walkerton. She is also very interested in immunizations and immunization advocacy. She represents the Canadian Pediatric Society on the National Advisory Committee for Immunizations. She also serves as a Consultant Physician with Public Health Ontario’s Infection Prevention and Control team.
  • Jamie G. Clark
    Over a 40-year career, Jamie has extensive experience in nursing practice, education, and leadership in both community and academic acute hospitals. Her experience also includes many years of consulting in health-care administration across Canada. She is a graduate of Victoria Hospital School of Nursing (London Ontario), University of Western Ontario, and University of Toronto. As Director of Environmental and Support Services, Jamie, is currently providing the leadership, with her team, to ensure quality cleaning practices and a positive patient experience at London Health Sciences Centre.
  • Rosemarie Howie
    Rose completed a Master’s of Science in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Guelph; and a PhD in Medical Microbiology specializing in cleaning, disinfection and sterilization at the University of Manitoba. She has worked in industry, government and in the university setting. Her most recent research studies have emphasized the need for effective cleaning and disinfection in health care settings to prevent pathogen transmission, with publications including: Survival of enveloped and non-enveloped viruses on surfaces compared with other micro-organisms and impact of suboptimal disinfectant exposure; and, Modeling survival in buildup biofilm for complex medical devices. Currently, Rose works with Infection Prevention and Control at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and a dynamic, dedicated Infection Control team; and in conjunction with the engaged and energetic team in Environmental Services at LHSC.
