Health Unit Opens Shortened Second Dose Appointments to All Individuals 12 and Older

Posted by on

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) will expand shortened second dose intervals to all individuals 12 years of age and older, starting Monday, June 28th. Continued large deliveries of vaccine and additional staff resources at mass vaccination clinics, have given the Health Unit confidence that it can extend shortened second dose intervals to all individuals. The decision follows the Province’s announcement Friday to expand shortened intervals to all those over the age of 18. Starting Monday, June 28 at 8:00 a.m., anyone 12 years of age and older in the London and Middlesex region will be able to book their second dose appointments at the shortened interval of 28 days.

“This announcement is a big step toward ensuring that all individuals in our region have the opportunity to enjoy a two-dose summer,” says Dr. Chris Mackie, Medical Officer of Health with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “When you are re-booking your shortened second dose, it is important to remember that you must not book your second dose appointment any earlier than 28 days after your first dose of an mRNA vaccine.”

The shortened second dose interval will only be available to those who received a first dose of an mRNA vaccine and must be booked no earlier than 28 days from the date they received a first dose of mRNA vaccine. Those who received a first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine must wait at least eight-weeks between vaccine doses.

On June 24th, the Health Unit announced that anyone who received a first dose of vaccine on or before May 30th could re-book an earlier second dose. In order to support shortened second dose intervals for all individuals 12 years of age and older in the region, the Health Unit has added capacity to its vaccination clinics and will open approximately 50,000 more appointments starting Monday morning, with 6,600 new appointments being added each day.
