Free Public Screening of Milk…Born Into This World at Wolf Performance Hall

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is hosting a free, public screening of Milk…Born Into This World on Tuesday, November 29th at 5:30 p.m., at the London Central Library’s Wolf Performance Hall. The documentary film, by award-winning Director and Producer Noemi Weis, examines matters related to birth and infant feeding around the globe, including the politics, controversies and commercialization that often accompany these issues. In addition to her directing and producing credits, Weis is also the founder of international film production company Filmblanc Inc.

One of Canada’s Largest Health Studies Returns to Seek Participants for Local Study Centre in…

Issued by the Middlesex-London Health Unit on behalf of the Ontario Health Study: The Ontario Health Study (OHS) once again invites London area residents to participate in a long-term health research study and learn more about their health at the London Study Centre, October 4-5. The Study encourages area residents, aged 30-74 years, to complete a short questionnaire and provide a blood sample that will enable researchers to better understand what affects our health and quality of life. The Study hopes to repeat these successes of its January 2015 run in London and is reaching out to previous participants to help spread the word.


World Breastfeeding Week 2016: Supporting Breastfeeding Moms

Having a support system is an important part of encouraging mothers to breastfeed their children. The goal of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is to encourage moms to seek the support they need, in particular peer support. The annual observance aims to increase awareness about the critical role breastfeeding plays for the nutrition, immunologic protection, growth, and development of young children. World Breastfeeding Week starts on Saturday, October 1st and continues until Friday, the 7th.


Health Unit Brings Finding Dory to Victoria Park For Smoke-Free Movie Night

While the sky is expected to be cloudy, the crowd will be filled with smiles and laughs as the Middlesex-London Health Unit brings Pixar Studios’ summer hit Finding Dory to Victoria Park tonight. Everyone is invited to attend the free Smoke-Free Movie Night, the Health Unit’s fifth such event in the Park, and is encouraged to arrive early with their lawn chairs, blankets and snacks to take part in the activities that begin at 5:00 p.m.


Smoke-Free Movie Night Returns to Victoria Park This Friday Night

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is inviting families from across the region to its Smoke-Free Movie Night in Victoria Park this week. This Friday, the MLHU and its One Life One You youth advocacy group will be partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society for a screening of Pixar Studios’ hit film, Finding Dory. The Health Unit’s fifth annual Smoke-Free Movie night aims to spread the word that smoking in youth-rated movies is not okay.


Blanket of Late Summer Heat And Humidity Covers Region For Next Two Days

It’s a hot and sticky back to school across London and Middlesex County today. The Environment Canada forecast is calling for daytime highs in the low thirties and Humidex values near 42 over the next two days, prompting the seventh Heat Warning of the summer. The Heat Warning is expected to remain in place through Wednesday and into early Thursday when rain is forecast to bring relief from the high humidity.


Health Unit Updates Investigation Into Recent Salmonella Cases

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is continuing its investigation into the unusally high number of salmonella cases reported to it over the last couple of weeks. As of today, the Health Unit has been notified of 37 confirmed, six probable and one suspect case of salmonella infection since the 18th of August.


Discovery of Home-Based Tattoo Business Prompts Warning from Health Unit

London, ON - The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding the community today that getting a tattoo from an unlicensed, home-based tattoo shop can be extremely dangerous and could lead to long-term health effects. Following up on a tip, Public Health Inspectors visited a residence on Shelbourne Street in London recently and found that the resident was engaged in providing tattoo services without having adequate infection prevention and control measures in place.


Surveillance Effort Identifies Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus in Middlesex County

London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced this afternoon that mosquitoes from a trap in Mount Brydges have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The news marks the second time in two weeks that a trap in the region had been found to contain mosquitoes capable of transmitting the virus to people, and shows that West Nile Virus activity is becoming more widespread in London and Middlesex County. The first positive mosquito trap, located in London’s Pond Mills area, was announced on August 15th.
