The Middlesex-London Health Unit is continuing its investigation into the unusally high number of salmonella cases reported to it over the last couple of weeks. As of today, the Health Unit has been notified of 37 confirmed, six probable and one suspect case of salmonella infection since the 18th of August.
Discovery of Home-Based Tattoo Business Prompts Warning from Health Unit
London, ON - The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding the community today that getting a tattoo from an unlicensed, home-based tattoo shop can be extremely dangerous and could lead to long-term health effects. Following up on a tip, Public Health Inspectors visited a residence on Shelbourne Street in London recently and found that the resident was engaged in providing tattoo services without having adequate infection prevention and control measures in place.
Surveillance Effort Identifies Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus in Middlesex County
London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced this afternoon that mosquitoes from a trap in Mount Brydges have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The news marks the second time in two weeks that a trap in the region had been found to contain mosquitoes capable of transmitting the virus to people, and shows that West Nile Virus activity is becoming more widespread in London and Middlesex County. The first positive mosquito trap, located in London’s Pond Mills area, was announced on August 15th.
Health Unit Investigating Number of Recent Salmonella Cases
The Middlesex-London Health Unit is investigating 14 laboratory-confirmed cases of salmonella reported since last Thursday. Based on a five-year average of salmonella cases reported in August, the Health Unit would expect to see about nine cases over the entire month, so the number of cases reported over a short timeframe is unusual. While the Health Unit continues its investigation and conducts follow-up interviews with those who have become ill, a common food item or circumstance that links the cases has yet to emerge. Those who have become sick range from young children to seniors, who consumed a variety of food items, in multiple locations.
Screening of Angry Birds Marks “Smoke-Free Movie Night’s” Return to Strathroy
Families from across the Strathroy-Caradoc area can catch some late summer fun at Strathroy’s Fair Grounds Recreation Complex this Friday with a free, smoke-free, outdoor screening of DreamWorks’ Angry Birds. Activities, including games, face painting, a family photo booth and more get underway at 5:00 p.m. with the film set to start at dusk. Because it does not show any on-screen tobacco use, Angry Birds, like previously shown Smoke-Free Movie Night films, is an ideal movie for the whole family.
Mosquitoes Found in South East London Trap Test Positive for West Nile Virus
With the promise of more hot days ahead in the summer of 2016, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is calling on residents to remain vigilant in preventing mosquito bites. The reminder comes after positive West Nile Virus mosquitoes were collected in a trap located in the Pond Mills area. In addition to using DEET to reduce mosquito biting, the Health Unit is drawing attention to the steps the public can take to reduce places where mosquitoes can breed on their properties.
Scorching, Sticky Weather Returns To Middlesex-London This Week
London, ON – With temperatures expected to climb to 31ºC by mid-afternoon Tuesday, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is issuing the sixth extreme temperature alert of the summer, this time an Extended Heat Warning, as it will remain in effect for four consecutive days. The current Environment Canada forecast calls for high humidex values for the next few days, warm evenings and daytime highs of, 31ºC, 32ºC, 33ºC and 33ºC for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively. The Extended Heat Warning will likely be lifted on Friday afternoon, when cloudy conditions and rain are expected to bring some relief from the heat.
Return of High Temperatures and Humidity Prompt Region’s Fifth Heat Warning
The Middlesex-London Health Unit is issuing the region’s fifth Heat Warning of the summer as the latest forecast from Environment Canada is calling for temperatures above 31ºC and high humidity for tomorrow and Friday. The Heat Warning is expected to remain in effect until Friday evening when overnight temperatures are expected to fall below 20ºC.
Ongoing Heat and Humidity Prompt Health Unit to Extend Heat Warning
The latest Environment Canada forecast has prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to extend its Heat Warning over the weekend. This Extended Heat Warning will remain in effect until Sunday evening, when temperatures are expected to drop below 20ºC.
High Humidity and Heat Combine for Region’s Third Heat Warning
The Middlesex-London Health Unit is issuing an Extended Heat Warning as high temperatures and humidity forecasted by Environment Canada are expected to last from Thursday through Saturday. The Extended Heat Warning will remain in effect from Thursday, July 21 until temperatures drop below 20ºC, which is expected by Saturday evening.
