Mosquitoes From Three London Traps Test Positive for West Nile Virus

While there’s still plenty of sun and fun to be had this summer, Londoners shouldn’t drop their guard against mosquitoes. The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding the community to protect itself against bites after receiving reports this week that mosquitoes found in three London traps were carrying West Nile Virus. The traps are located in east London, northeast London and in the Pond Mills area.


Alert: Recent Testing Shows Fentanyl Showing up in Other Drugs

Ahead of the Civic Holiday weekend, the Middlesex-London Health Unit, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Addiction Services Thames Valley (ADSTV) and the London Police Service are issuing an alert. Potentially lethal fentanyl is showing up in other drugs.


World Hepatitis Day

Join us on Thursday, July 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Covent Garden Market to learn about viral hepatitis, testing and support available in our community. We’ll have some snacks, giveaways and fun games, too! The following day is World Hepatitis Day (Friday, July 28), which marks a global effort to raise awareness on the importance of testing, prevention and treatment of hepatitis.

Effort to Address Opioid Misuse Gets Provincial Funds to Support Local Fight

The Middlesex-London Health Unit will receive $250,000 in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care as part of the province’s $15 million effort to address the current opioid crisis. The provincial funding was announced by Health Minister, Dr. Eric Hoskins, and is being distributed among Ontario’s 36 public health units to support efforts to address opioid abuse and prevent overdoses.


Forecast Prompts 2017’s First Extended Heat Warning for London and Middlesex

London, ON – Environment Canada’s forecast is calling for high temperatures on Sunday, June 11th through Tuesday, June 13th, which meet the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s criteria for the first Extended Heat Warning of 2017. This Extended Heat Warning will remain in effect until temperatures are predicated to drop below threshold criteria, which is expected to happen early in the morning on Wednesday, June 14th.


Enjoy Summer Sun Safely

London, ON – Even if the calendar hanging on the wall doesn’t say so, it sure feels like summer is here. With a fine weekend forecast that includes plenty of sunshine and summer-like heat well into next week, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is calling on local residents to protect themselves and their families from the sun’s harmful rays. The reminder comes about mid-way through National Sun Awareness Week, which continues until Sunday, June 11th.

High-Risk Behaviour Prompts Health Unit to Raise Awareness About STIs and Testing

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is investigating two cases of individuals with syphilis, one of whom also has an HIV infection, who have engaged in risky sexual behaviour. Both individuals have been participating in activities that could lead to the spread of infections. Of the two, one has been meeting anonymous partners through the Craigslist website, while the other is an individual who participates in local swingers events. Because of the nature of these encounters, the Health Unit has been unable to notify any individuals who may have been exposed to potential infections.


Support The Call For Plain And Standardized Tobacco Packaging Today

The Middlesex-London Health Unit and its One Life One You youth advocacy group, are joining forces with local health agencies and young people across Ontario to support plain and standardized tobacco packaging. The campaign, coordinated by Freeze the Industry, a network of youth activists standing against the tobacco industry, is taking to social media to counter the industry’s well-funded effort to halt the implementation of plain and standardized tobacco product packaging legislation in Canada.
