SubscribeOverhaul of DineSafe Website Makes it Easier to Find Restaurant Inspection Info
After almost five years of providing information about food premises inspections in London and Middlesex County, the Middlesex-London Health Unit has given its DineSafe website a facelift. Launched in February, 2010, the DineSafe website provides up-to-date information about the results of inspections conducted by Public Health Inspectors at restaurants, cafeterias, grocery and convenience stores, and anywhere food is sold. The new website uses the same responsive design functionality that makes the Health Unit’s main website work on devices ranging from smart phones and tablets to computers.
Plunging Mercury Triggers the Region's Second Cold Weather Alert of 2015
With a forecast calling for ambient temperatures to drop to -22 degrees C overnight, with windchill values in the -30 range, the Medical Officer of Health has issued the Middlesex-London area’s second COLD WEATHER ALERT of 2015. This Alert comes into effect immediately and will remain in place until Wednesday, January 14th when the daytime high is expected to reach -7 degrees C. The first COLD WEATHER ALERT of the year, issued on Monday, January 5th and extended on January 7th, ended yesterday.
"Rethink Your Drinking" Campaign Draws Link Between Cancer Risk and Alcohol
What was in your glass when you toasted in the New Year matters more than you may think. That’s because when it comes to alcohol, the more you drink, the higher the risk of cancer. The Middlesex-London Health Unit, in partnership with other health units across the region is launching the next phase of the Rethink Your Drinking campaign, this time with an emphasis on the links between alcohol consumption and the risk of developing cancer.
Continuing Cold Weather Prompts Extension of Cold Weather Alert
The Medical Officer of Health has extended Middlesex-London’s first Cold Weather Alert of 2015 until Sunday, January 11th. The current alert, issued on Monday, January 5th will remain stay in effect until the end of the week, when temperatures for the region are forecast to rise above -10 degrees C.

With temperatures of -15C and a forecast calling for frigid weather through the work week, Middlesex-London’s Medical Officer of Health has issued the region’s first COLD WEATHER ALERT of 2015. This Alert comes into effect immediately and will remain in effect until Thursday, January 8th when the current cold snap is expected to ease.
Health Unit Reminds Residents to Take Steps to Reduce the Spread of Viruses
London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit has been receiving increased reports of people with symptoms of illness that include diarrhea and vomiting. The viruses that cause these symptoms are known to circulate at this time every year. These germs can spread easily via unwashed hands and also on food, as well as unwashed surfaces and sometimes by just being in the same room as someone who is sick.

Local Report a Guide to Meeting Climate Change-Related Health Challenges
The Middlesex-London Health Unit released a report today that takes a close look at the vulnerability of the local community to the potential health challenges that climate change can present. After climate change was identified as a potentially significant local health hazard, the Health Unit worked with a team of researchers to assess the risk and provide guidance to address emerging health challenges related to climate. Entitled Assessment of Vulnerability to the Health Impacts of Climate Change in Middlesex-London, the new report was prepared for the Health Unit by Dr. Peter Berry and Jaclyn Paterson from Health Canada, and Chris Buse, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Toronto.
London and Middlesex Smash in motion Challenge Goal
The numbers are in! London and Middlesex County residents took up the month-long in motion™ Physical Activity Challenge in October, smashing the total number minutes logged during last year’s inaugural edition of the Challenge. Once the totals were counted from the in motion™ app and the paper trackers, there were more than 4.7 million minutes of physical activity completed by some 11,600 people.
Limited Influenza Activity in the Community Makes it an Ideal Time to Get Vaccinated
Chills, sniffles, sneezes and coughs are regular occurrences in late-November, as influenza takes hold in the community, however these symptoms seem to be noticeably absent so far in the fall of 2014. The limited amount of local influenza activity has prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to encourage local residents to get immunized against the flu, if they haven’t done so already.
