World Breastfeeding Week 2014: Make Breastfeeding Work for Your Life

Each year Canada celebrates World Breastfeeding Week from October 1st to 7th. The goal of the week is to raise awareness about how important breastfeeding is for the nutrition, immunologic protection, growth, and development of young children. This year, World Breastfeeding Week aims to show how breastfeeding can fit easily into a healthy lifestyle.


Month-Long in motion™ Challenge Gets Underway Today

Building regular physical activity into every day is the first step on the path to a healthier life, sometimes all you need is the motivation to get going. That’s the goal of the second annual in motion™ Physical Activity Community Challenge which gets underway today. After a successful inaugural Challenge in 2013, during which London residents spent more than 2 million minutes being active, this year’s edition is being expanded to include municipalities across Middlesex County. By answering the call to add 15 minutes of physical activity to each day in October, in motion™ organizers hope local residents taking up the Challenge will make the region “Canada’s Healthiest Community”.


Initial Results of London and Middlesex county Candidates' Survey Posted Online

The initial results of a survey of London and Middlesex County candidates running in the upcoming October 27th municipal elections have been posted online. The Middlesex-London Health Unit partnered with the London Community Foundation, London Poverty Research Centre, and the United Way London & Middlesex, in asking candidates questions that focused on poverty-related issues. Of the 177 candidates who were sent the survey, 73 had responded by 10:00 a.m. today, to nine questions covering topics such as poverty reduction, transportation, housing and the affordability of food.


URGENT: Smoke-Free Movie Night, Featuring "Frozen" Postponed Due to Forecast

The Middlesex-London Health Unit’s 3rd annual Smoke-Free Movie Night has been postponed, due to the weather forecast for tomorrow evening, which now calls for rain, a risk of thunderstorms and winds gusting to more than 50 km/h.


Health Unit's 3rd Annual Smoke-Free Movie Night to Feature "Frozen" Saturday Night

The popcorn will be on the house when the Middlesex-London Health Unit invites families to Victoria Park this Saturday, September 20th, for a free screening of Disney’s Oscar winning hit, Frozen. Last year more than 1,700 people attended the Smoke-Free Movie Night, so families are encouraged to arrive early and bring their lawnchairs and blankets to take advantage of all the activities that get underway at 5:00 p.m.


Candidates' Survey Focuses on Poverty Issues in London and Middlesex County

The Middlesex-London Health Unit, in partnership with the London Community Foundation, London Poverty Research Centre, and the United Way London & Middlesex, is asking candidates seeking office in the upcoming municipal elections to respond to a new poverty-focused survey launched this week. The online survey is part of a collaborative local and provincial project coordinated by the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health and administered by local partners such as the Health Unit. The purpose of the project is to build awareness and support among decision makers for healthy public policy which assists in reducing poverty and food insecurity in Ontario.

Safety Coalition Says Most Children Who Should Use Booster Seats in Vehicles, Don't

More than 70 percent of children who should be seated in a booster seat when riding in a car, minivan or pickup truck aren’t, exposing them to potential injuries. That statistic, along with concerns about incorrect booster seat use, has prompted the Child Safety Coalition of Middlesex-London to tell parents and caregivers that proper booster seat use is critical to the safety of their children. To help underscore the importance of booster seat use, the Coalition will have a presence at community health fairs, events and presentations throughout London and Middlesex County between September and December.


West Nile Virus Activity Continues to Increase in London and Middlesex County

The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced today that two more dead crows found in London have tested positive for West Nile Virus. One was found in the Old South area, while the second was discovered in Byron. So far this summer three dead birds in the region have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first was announced on August 29th and had been found in the Hyde Park area.
