In July, the Middlesex-London Health Unit began participating in a pilot project with the City of London to test local wastewater for genetic evidence of COVID-19. After collecting wastewater samples from area pollution control plants since shortly after announcing the initiative in July, City officials have notified the Health Unit that a sample collected on September 6th is the first to contain the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Health Unit Declares COVID-19 Outbreak
London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit has declared a community COVID-19 outbreak after three Western University students tested positive yesterday. In addition to these three cases, the Health Unit was also notified of two additional, associated cases today who are also Western students; these two cases will be added to the Middlesex-London case count tomorrow. While the students who have tested positive all live in the community and have not attended classes or activities on campus, they have had a number of interactions at downtown bars and restaurants, and with students in neighbouring housing units.
COVID-19 Case at Local Restaurant Prompts MLHU to Reach Out to Patrons
The Middlesex-London Health Unit has been notified of a new COVID-19 case in an individual who had spent two hours at the El Furniture Warehouse restaurant between 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. on Monday, September 7th.
London COVID-19 Assessment Centres to Have Regular Hours on Labour Day
The COVID-19 Assessment Centres located at Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre (656 Elizabeth Street in London) and Oakridge Arena (825 Valetta Street in London), will be open for Labour Day. The Carling Heights Assessment Centre will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on holiday Monday, while the Assessment Centre at Oakridge Arena will be open on from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, each site will follow their regular schedules for the holiday weekend, with the Carling Heights site open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, while the Oakridge site will be closed, as usual.
Health Unit to Host its Second Virtual Town Hall on Monday, August 31st
The Middlesex-London Health Unit will hold its second Virtual Town Hall on Monday, August 31st, to answer questions and provide information about COVID-19 in London and Middlesex. The online meeting will include a brief presentation from the Health Unit’s Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Alex Summers, followed by questions from people in the community.

Hot and Humid Weather Prompts Health Unit to Issue Two-Day Heat Warning
The current Environment Canada forecast calls for a daytime high of 31º Celsius today and 32º Celsius for tomorrow with overnight lows of 20 degrees. Humidex values are expected to reach 40 today, and 38 on Monday. These forecast conditions have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue a Heat Warning that will be in effect for the next two days, until rain expected on Tuesday cools local temperatures.
COVID-19 Assessment Centres to Remain Open for the Civic Holiday Weekend
It will be business as usual at London’s COVID-19 Assessment Centres for the Civic Holiday weekend, with the facilities maintaining regular hours of operation. The Assessment Centre at the Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre, located at 656 Elizabeth Street in London will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., while the Oakridge Arena location at 825 Valetta (which is usually closed Saturday and Sunday) will be open on Holiday Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Extended Heat Warning Issued as Intense Heat Returns for Last Weekend of July
London, ON – The weather that has bathed the Middlesex-London region for much of July makes a return to the area this weekend, leading the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue another Extended Heat Warning that comes into effect tomorrow. The local Environment Canada forecast calls for daytime highs of 31° Celsius for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and evening lows of 20° Celsius or warmer, meeting the Health Unit’s threshold for an Extended Heat Warning that will remain in effect until Tuesday, July 28th.

With the London and Middlesex County region moving in to Stage 3 of Ontario’s recovery, the Medical Officer of Health has issued instructions to all local businesses and organizations to ensure masking and other public health measures are put in place. Dr. Chris Mackie issued the Instruction under Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act today, requiring operators of all enclosed public spaces to implement measures requiring the public to wear face coverings at all times while on their premises.
