Medical Officer of Health to Issue Order to Reduce Risk in Specific Circumstances

In order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, Middlesex-London’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Chris Mackie, will issue a Section 22 Class Order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act that will compel higher risk businesses to follow public health principles, including staff and customers using masks when in prolonged close contact with clients. The Order comes following a review of local data and research on the effectiveness of masks as an additional public health measure to prevent and reduce the spread of COVID-19. It will be issued for London and Middlesex County on Monday, July 6th.


Carling Heights and Oakridge Arena Assessment Centres Remain Open on Canada Day

LONDON, ON – The COVID-19 Assessment Centres located at Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre (656 Elizabeth Street in London) and Oakridge Arena (825 Valetta Street in London), will be open on Canada Day, Wednesday July 1st. Carling Heights Assessment Centre will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the Assessment Centre at Oakridge Arena will be open on from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Canada Day Brings Extended Heat Warning for London and Middlesex

London, ON – The current Environment Canada forecast for London and Middlesex calls for temperatures in excess of 30º Celsius over the coming days. These forecast conditions have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue an Extended Heat Warning that will be in effect for at least the next week, or until there is a change in the local forecast.


Health Unit Warns Not to Gather in Groups Greater Than 10 Following Outbreak Among Party-Goers

London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced three new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the local number of those infected to 625. Among the new cases reported today are two people associated with attending gatherings of more than 10 people. The initial case was reported on June 24, 2020. Since June 24, a total of eight cases have been associated with these gatherings, two of which were reported in today’s case count. The cases associated with this outbreak include six females and two males, all in their 20s.


One-Day Heat Alert Accompanies Summer’s Arrival Tomorrow

Summer arrives tomorrow accompanied by hot temperatures, as Saturday’s Environment Canada forecast calls for a daytime high of 31º Celsius, exceeding the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s threshold for issuing a Heat Alert. Though the Heat Alert will only be in effect tomorrow, based on the current forecast, the rest of the weekend will feature temperatures just below the Health Unit’s benchmark, prompting a reminder to residents about how to beat the heat.


MLHU Notifies of COVID-19 Case Who Attended June 6th Black Lives Matter Rally

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) was notified yesterday that an individual who attended the Black Lives Matter rally at Victoria Park on Saturday, June 6th, has tested positive for COVID-19. The Health Unit has been in contact with the individual and confirms that they were wearing a mask while at the demonstration and that they have not shown any symptoms since, nor were they symptomatic when they attended the protest more than a week ago.


MLHU Issues Heat Warning as Hot and Humid Weather Set to Move into Our Area

London, ON – The next few days are going to be hot and muggy. The current Environment Canada forecast calls for a daytime high of 33º Celsius for tomorrow and an overnight low of 21 degrees, before Wednesday arrives with an expected high of 32º Celsius. Humidex values are expected to reach 34 on Tuesday. These forecast conditions have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue a Heat Warning that will be in effect for the next two days, until rain expected on Wednesday cools local temperatures.


New Hours for Oakridge Arena Assessment Centre Come into Effect on Monday

In order to make COVID-19 Assessment Centre services more accessible and convenient, the hours of operation at the Oakridge Arena site will be changing next week. Starting Monday, June 8, the Oakridge Arena COVID-19 Assessment Centre will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. The hours of operation at the Assessment Centre located at the Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre will remain unchanged, with the facility open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., seven days a week.


Health Units Working Together as COVID-19 Outbreak Affects Migrant Workers

The Middlesex-London Health Unit and Southwestern Public Health are working together in response to a COVID-19 outbreak declared amongst migrant farm workers who live in London and work at a farm in Elgin County. The initial case was reported to the Middlesex-London Health Unit earlier this week, which led to 16 of their close contacts being tested for the virus on Tuesday. Test results for seven of those people have now come back positive and are included in the eight cases being reported by the Health Unit today.


While Hot Humid Weather Descends on The Region Remember Physical Distancing

London, ON – Although there is still about a month left in spring, our region is getting an early taste of summer weather over the next three days, prompting the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue a series of three Heat Alerts today. The current Environment Canada forecast calls for temperatures to reach 31º Celsius today, tomorrow and again on Wednesday, May 27th, exceeding the Health Unit’s Heat Alert threshold. Conditions will also feel very muggy with Humidex values reaching 39 today and 37 tomorrow.
