Continued Hot and Hazy Weather Extends Region’s Current Extended Heat Warning

London, ON – The sweltering heat that has held the Middlesex-London region in its grip since late last week is expected to continue for the next several days. The latest Environment Canada forecast calls for daytime highs in the low 30s through Thursday and overnight low temperatures between 20C and 22C before things drop below 30C on Friday.

A mass of hot and muggy summer weather is expected to descend on the London and Middlesex County region this holiday weekend, prompting the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue the third extreme temperature alert of the year. This time the Health Unit’s advice comes in the form of an Extended Heat Warning which comes into effect tomorrow (Friday, June 29th) and continues through to Tuesday, July 3rd, when the Environment Canada forecast calls for a daytime high of 29º Celsius.


Blast of Summer Heat Seems to be Mother Nature’s Gift for Father’s Day

With a very hot and humid Father’s Day forecast, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is issuing the second Heat Alert of 2018. The current Environment Canada forecast for the London and Middlesex County region calls for a daytime high temperature of 32º Celsius for both Sunday and Monday, before cooler weather returns overnight into Tuesday. The Heat Alert will come into effect on Sunday, June 17th and will remain in effect until temperatures are expected drop overnight on Monday, June 18th.


Potential Increase in Presence of Fentanyl Causes Concern for Local Agencies

New figures about the presence of fentanyl in London, including a spike in the number of opioid-related deaths late last year, have caught the attention of local agencies and organizations on the front lines of the opioid crisis. Information from multiple datasets and the recent warning by London Police that new forms of fentanyl may have arrived in the region, are prompting heightened concern from the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and its partners. The Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario recently reported that nine opioid-related deaths occurred in the London region last November and December.

Health Unit Issues Heat Alert as Forecast Calls for Hot and Sticky Conditions Today

Environment Canada’s revised forecast for today predicts temperatures that will reach the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s threshold for issuing a one-day Heat Alert. The forecast now calls for a high of 31º Celsius and very muggy conditions with a humidex value expected to reach 37. The Heat Alert will only be in effect for the rest of today, as tomorrow’s forecast calls for temperatures to drop a bit with an expected daytime high of 28º Celsius.


Warm Weather Prompts Reminder From Health Unit About Dealing With the Heat

Even though there’s still a month left in spring, bright sunshine, warm temperatures and humidex values approaching 30 are bathing London and Middlesex County in very summer-like weather today. While today’s expected high of 29º Celsius isn’t enough to trigger a Heat Alert, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding the community that it’s important to consider the heat when planning outdoor activities when the mercury climbs.


Plan for Local Supervised Consumption Facilities Receives Provincial Support

London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and Regional HIV / AIDS Connection (RHAC) have received letters of support from the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to establish two Supervised Consumption Facilities (SCFs) in London. The provincial support includes letters detailing capital and operational funding, and a letter of support for the establishment of SCFs from Minister Helena Jaczek, all of which are required for the Health Canada application process.
