Even though there’s still a month left in spring, bright sunshine, warm temperatures and humidex values approaching 30 are bathing London and Middlesex County in very summer-like weather today. While today’s expected high of 29º Celsius isn’t enough to trigger a Heat Alert, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding the community that it’s important to consider the heat when planning outdoor activities when the mercury climbs.
Plan for Local Supervised Consumption Facilities Receives Provincial Support
London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and Regional HIV / AIDS Connection (RHAC) have received letters of support from the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to establish two Supervised Consumption Facilities (SCFs) in London. The provincial support includes letters detailing capital and operational funding, and a letter of support for the establishment of SCFs from Minister Helena Jaczek, all of which are required for the Health Canada application process.

The London-Middlesex Road Safety Committee, Active and Safe Routes to School, and Tony the Street-Wise Cat are visiting Stoneybrook Public School on Friday, May 4th. Fresh off production of his new animated Lego videos, Tony the Street-Wise Cat will join his human friends to teach children at Stoneybrook about the importance of walking to school and how to use Pedestrian Crossovers (PXOs) safely. Among the partners at the event will be representatives from the London Police Service, the Middlesex-London Health Unit, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, London Health Sciences Centre and the Stoneybrook School Travel Planning Committee.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and the Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) announced a partnership today that will provide new dental treatment options for Indigenous community members across the region. Effective tomorrow, the Dental Clinic space at 50 King Street will be shared between MLHU and SOAHAC. Through its Healthy Smiles Ontario program, the Health Unit will continue to provide preventive oral health services to children and youth under the age of 17 from qualifying families, while SOAHAC provides culturally safe dental treatment services to its clients.

A new partnership between the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and the Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) will be announced next Monday, April 30th at 10:30 a.m. in the Middlesex County Building. This innovative collaboration will provide Indigenous community members in London and Middlesex with access to culturally safe dental treatment services in the existing clinic space at MLHU’s 50 King Street office.

With multiple overlapping drug crises continuing in the city, local health and social services agencies fear that number could continue to climb unless urgent action is taken. With evidence to show it will be used and a public consultation process that showed a strong desire to support those addicted to opioid drugs, the Regional HIV / AIDS Connection (RHAC) and the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) have submitted an application to Health Canada to open a supervised consumption facility in the city.

London, ON – Weather conditions are coming together to make tomorrow a beautiful time to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. But with the sunshine, warmer temperatures and a Saturday to enjoy the festivities, the Middlesex-London Health Unit and its partners are calling on would-be revelers to plan ahead and think about their personal safety especially if they plan to drink or use drugs. Surveillance data from healthcare sources to the Health Unit has indicated a possible increase in the number of suspected opioid-related overdoses in the region over the last few weeks. This news, combined with the reality that the potentially lethal drug Fentanyl is being found mixed in with other street drugs, makes it critically important to take steps to reduce the risk of injury, overdose or death.

The Middlesex-London Board of Health held a special meeting at eight o’clock this morning and will hold a news conference at 11:00 a.m. to announce next steps in the health unit’s location project.
