The Middlesex-London Health Unit and Regional HIV/AIDS Connection received notification late Wednesday afternoon that the Federal Government had approved the applications for two permanent Consumption and Treatment Services (CTSs) in London, at 446 York Street and 241 Simcoe Street. The correspondence from Health Canada also advised officials that the temporary overdose prevention site (TOPS) at 186 King Street had been approved as an interim facility until the site at 446 York is operational. The news comes on the same day that correspondence was also received from Ontario’s Health Minister indicating that TOPS would continue to operate through the end of 2018.

With the passing of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 (SFOA, 2017), the smoking and vaping of cannabis will be regulated under the same provincial legislation that controls tobacco, banning its consumption in the same places where tobacco use is already prohibited.

Partners to Release Community Drug and Alcohol Strategy Report for London And Middlesex County
A concerted community effort, drawing on the experience and expertise of many organizations and individuals across the region has resulted in the creation of the Middlesex-London Community Drug & Alcohol Strategy – A Foundation For Action. This strategy report, which contains 23 recommendations and several associated actions, aims to prevent and address local substance-related harms. The report will be released on Tuesday, October 16th.

Families of Breastfed Babies to Launch National Breastfeeding Week Saturday
Families who breastfeed their babies are invited to gather at the South London Community Centre on Saturday morning for this year’s Breastfeeding Challenge, an early kick-off to National Breastfeeding Week. To celebrate this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding - Foundation of Life”, the Middlesex-London Health Unit and its community partners are hoping to attract a large number of nursing mothers, their partners, support people and of course their children, from across the region. The Challenge takes place this Saturday, at the South London Community Centre. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Breastfeeding Challenge at 11:00 a.m. The goal of the Challenge is to have as many breastfed babies as possible together at the same time.

London, ON – In the face of the on-going drug crisis affecting London and Middlesex, the Middlesex-London Health Unit has developed a business case for Supervised Consumption in London. The document will be presented at this week’s Board of Health meeting.
Temperature Expected to Reach 32° Celsius With High Humidity Tomorrow Prompting One-Day Heat Alert
Although it’s been hot and muggy for the last several days, the conditions are expected to cross the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s threshold for a Heat Alert tomorrow. The current Environment Canada forecast is calling for the mercury to climb to a daytime high of 32° Celsius with a humidex of 44. It’s important to consider the heat and humidity when planning outdoor activities when conditions reach this level, including any outdoor work, physical activity and sports. The Heat Alert will come into effect Wednesday, September 5th and will remain in effect throughout the day, until temperatures are expected to drop overnight to a low of 18° Celsius.
