There Has Never Been A Better Time to Quit: National Non-Smoking Week Jan. 18-24

London, ON –National Non-Smoking Week kicks off today and the Middlesex London Health Unit is reminding tobacco users that quitting takes practice…so practice often! It may take between seven and 30 quit attempts before being able to break the addiction for good, so if at first you don’t succeed, try again. Getting tobacco out of their lives is one of the best things anyone can do for their health and well-being; and there’s never been a better time to quit. New amendments to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act came into effect on January 1st, 2016, banning the sale of flavoured tobacco products.


Health Unit Issues Cold Weather Alert as Mercury Expected to Drop Below -15C

London, ON – Despite taking a while to arrive, a wintry chill will descend on London and Middlesex County this evening, prompting the Medical Officer of Health to issue the region’s first Cold Weather Alert of 2016. The Alert will come into effect tonight at 10:00 p.m. when the temperature drops below -15C and will remain in effect until tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m., when the mercury is expected to rise above that threshold.


Stop the Spread of Infections This Holiday Season

London, ON – Several respiratory viruses, like rhinovirus, influenza and pertussis, and other infections, such as norovirus and chickenpox usually circulate at this time of year; and can spread even more easily when people gather for Holiday celebrations. The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding residents to take the necessary steps to stay healthy during this festive season.

Health Unit Warns About Unlicensed Home-Based Tattoo Shop

London, ON - The decision where to get a tattoo requires consideration; much more important than what it will look like, is who will create the tattoo. Public Health Inspectors from the Middlesex-London Health Unit inspected a home-based tattoo operation at a Waterloo Street residence recently, after receiving a complaint from a member of the public. During their visit, inspectors found that infection control measures and other safety procedures were deficient.


Health Unit Draws Attention to Increase In Local Pertussis Cases

London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit has recently noted an increase in the number of pertussis cases, including several confirmed cases at a local school, prompting the declaration of an outbreak there. Of the cases at the school, several were not vaccinated against the disease or were partially immunized. Because pertussis is often underreported, and is known to be present in many communities across the province, the Health Unit would like to remind residents about the ways they can protect themselves against this disease.


More Than 8 Million Minutes Logged During in motion™ Challenge

London, ON - The numbers are in! London and Middlesex County residents took up the month-long in motion™ Community Challenge in October, smashing the total number minutes logged in 2014. The totals were counted from the in motion™ app and the paper trackers to reveal more than 8.3 million minutes of physical activity completed by 19,773 people.


National Home Fire Safety Week

November 24 – 30, 2015 is National Home Fire Safety Week, and the Middlesex-London Health Unit is encouraging residents, landlords and property managers to reduce the risk of fires by making their homes smoke-free. Not only is smoking harmful to your health, but it’s the leading cause of fatal fires in Ontario (Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs).
