With the occurrence of COVID-19 outbreaks related to high-risk gatherings and the on-going presence of the highly transmissible Delta variant in the community, Middlesex-London’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Chris Mackie, issued a pair of Section 22 Class Orders this afternoon. The Orders are issued under the Health Protection and Promotion Act and will come into effect at noon on Thursday, September 23rd.

Health Unit Declares COVID-19 Outbreak at École Élémentaire La Pommeraie
The Middlesex-London Health Unit has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at École élémentaire La Pommeraie, in southwest London. The Health Unit was notified earlier today that a fourth individual who attends the school had tested positive for COVID-19. Through information gathered during the case investigation, the Health Unit has concluded that the virus had been spread between these close contacts while they were at the school. This is the first school-associated COVID-19 outbreak to be declared in London or Middlesex County this school year.
MLHU Vaccination Clinic Set to Begin Tomorrow at White Oaks Mall
After a successful 13-day run at CF Masonville Place, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is set to open its latest multi-day walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic at White Oaks Mall in south London tomorrow morning. The walk-in vaccination clinic at CF Masonville Place exceeded expectations, administering more than 2,500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, 52% of which were first doses, over 13 days between August 30th and September 12th. The opening of the latest mall-based clinic at White Oaks Mall is in keeping with the Health Unit’s strategy of offering the vaccine in neighbourhoods that have lower vaccination rates in ways that are as easy and convenient as possible for area residents.
Health Unit Investigating Reports of COVID-19 Cases in School-Aged Children
The Middlesex-London Health Unit has been notified that a member of Hillcrest Elementary School has tested positive for COVID-19. The Health Unit is also investigating a number of other cases in school-aged children. Notification will be sent to parents, guardians and staff as part of the Health Unit’s investigation into these cases.

Following the Provincial government’s announcement on Wednesday that a vaccine passport will be implemented across Ontario as of September 22nd, the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is recommending that all employers and business operators in the region implement a COVID-19 vaccination policy in order to ensure two-dose vaccination for anyone eligible in their workplace, business or facility.

MLHU Recognizes International Overdose Awareness Day
Although the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is taking pause and marking International Overdose Awareness Day. This year the Health Unit is showing solidarity by standing alongside partners, family and friends who have lost loved ones to overdose, recognizing the overwhelming impact of the ongoing opioid crisis. Opioid use and associated overdoses continue to have a devastating effect across our region. According to Health Canada, in the first nine months of the COVID-19 pandemic, 5,148 apparent opioid toxicity deaths occurred (April to December 2020), representing an 89% increase from the same time period in 2019 (2,722 deaths).
MLHU and Partners Administer Two Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine to Over 75 Percent of Population
With new vaccine coverage data released today, the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is announcing that over 75% of the region’s population aged 12 and older has now received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The total number of doses administered in London and Middlesex County, since the first dose was given just over eight months ago, now stands at 717,351, with 82.8% of the eligible population having received their first dose. This milestone comes as a result of collaboration with hundreds of organizations and partners across the region who have supported the vaccination effort by hosting vaccination clinics and administering COVID-19 vaccinations to primary care patients and long-term care and retirement home residents. It is through these partnerships and support from London Health Sciences Centre, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service, the County of Middlesex, the City of London and Thames Valley Family Health Team that this mass vaccination effort continues to be a success.
Hot Hazy and Humid Conditions Cause Health Unit to Issue a One-Day Heat Alert
The last weekend of August has brought with it some very hot and muggy weather. Despite there being a 40% chance of rain today, the Environment Canada forecast is calling for the temperature to reach a high of 32º Celsius with a Humidex expected to reach 42, enough to meet the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s criteria for a one-day Heat Alert. The temperatures are expected to continue being warm and humid overnight with a forecast low of 20 degrees, so the Heat Alert will remain in effect until Monday morning, when the daytime high is expected to reach 29º Celsius with a Humidex expected to reach 35.
