A recent increase in the number of cases and a shift in the profile of those who may be at risk have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to declare a community-wide syphilis outbreak. For only the second time since 2005, the local rate of syphilis cases exceeds the provincial rate. When compared to the number of local cases reported in 2014, the number of syphilis cases in the Middlesex-London region so far this year has more than tripled, to 113.

Health Unit Links Legionnaires’ Disease to Cooling Tower
London, ON – Middlesex-London Health Unit staff have concluded the investigation into the cause of an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease that made a half dozen people from a south central London neighbourhood ill. After investigating several potential sources, Public Health Inspectors received notification that samples they had taken from a cooling tower in the area were a genetic match for the bacteria which made six people sick. All those who had been diagnosed were hospitalized and are now recovering from their illness.

Forecast Prompts Extended Heat Warning for London and Middlesex
The latest Environment Canada forecast for London and Middlesex calls for temperatures to reach 34º Celsius tomorrow and remain hot and humid throughout this coming weekend, meeting the threshold for the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue an Extended Heat Warning. This warning will remain in effect until the morning of Monday, July 22nd, when temperatures are predicted to drop below threshold criteria.
Summer Heat For Next Two Days Brings Consecutive Heat Alerts
Summer heat will roll into the London and Middlesex County region later today, and will persist tomorrow, but not before we get a break from the warmth overnight. The current Environment Canada forecast calls for temperatures to reach 31º Celsius today and again tomorrow (Wednesday, July 10th), exceeding the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s Heat Alert threshold. There will actually be two consecutive Heat Alerts, as temperatures tonight are expected to drop to just 15º Celsius, well below the criteria, before climbing to a high of 31º Celsius again tomorrow. While today’s forecast is relatively humidity-free, the muggy conditions are expected to return tomorrow as humidex values are expected to make it feel like 39, and continuing overnight Wednesday before the Heat Alert is lifted on Thursday.

London, ON – For the second week in a row, the weekend is expected to kick off with conditions that are hot and sticky enough to trigger a one-day HEAT ALERT. The current Environment Canada forecast calls for temperatures to reach a high of 31 Celsius on Friday with humidex values climbing to 41, exceeding the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s thresholds for issuing a public notice. This HEAT ALERT is the second to be issued this summer.
