Canada Day Weekend to Kick Off with Hot Humid Conditions, Prompting Heat Alert

London, ON – Scorching heat will bathe the London and Middlesex County region in hot and sticky weather tomorrow that will make it feel like the high 30s, prompting the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue a one-day HEAT ALERT. The current Environment Canada forecast calls for the mercury to climb to a high of 32º Celsius on Friday with humidex values reaching 38, exceeding the Health Unit’s thresholds for the public notification.


A Safer Start to Summer as 900 Children Get Free Bicycle Helmets Through Helmets on Kids Partnership

Cycling is not only a great way for children to become more active, it’s also a practical and healthy transportation decision that can last a lifetime. While bicycle helmets are a requirement for any youth who ride a bike, the cost of a helmet can present a financial challenge for many families. To help meet this need, the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and the Brain Injury Association of London & Region, together with their community partners, will be distributing more than 900 bicycle helmets to school children in London and Middlesex County over the coming days, weeks and months. The long-running and successful Helmets on Kids campaign has made cycling safe and accessible to thousands of youth across the region for more than a decade.

Reports of suspected opioid-related poisonings have skyrocketed over the last few days, leaving public health officials, police, emergency services personel and emergency department staff to question whether a new and toxic form of drug has hit the streets. Since the weekend, there has been a substantial increase in the number of suspected opioid overdoses, well above the average number of cases that have been seen on a daily basis.

The current Environment Canada forecast calls for a low of -16°C this evening with windchill values dropping to -24 overnight and into Wednesday morning.


Week's Frigid Start Prompts Health Unit to Issue Year's Fifth Cold Weather Alert

Winter isn’t letting go of the London and Middlesex County area just yet. Very cold temperatures and windy conditions for today and overnight into Tuesday have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue the winter’s fifth Cold Weather Alert. The Alert came into effect this morning as windchill values dipped to -22 with ambient temperatures near the Health Unit’s threshold of -15°C. The current Environment Canada’s forecast is calling for temperatures to drop to a low of -16°C overnight with increasingly cold windchill values making it feel like -24. This Cold Weather Alert will remain in effect until tomorrow morning.


Opioid Crisis Response Continues, while Update Suggests Local Efforts are Saving Lives

London, ON – In the fall of 2018, it seemed as though the local fight against opioids was about to take a turn for the worse. Data released by Public Health Ontario in September, 2018, showed 22 people in London and Middlesex County had died from opioid poisoning in the first three months of the year. The data, combined with reports of more potent drugs arriving in the community and an increasing number of overdoses in August, pointed to the potential for an unprecedented number of opioid-related deaths for 2018.
